The General Rules Governing the Practice of Physical Therapy (Chapter 1150-1) have been amended to require demonstration of continuing competency for licensure in Tennessee. The rule is as follows:
1150-1-.12 CONTINUING COMPETENCE. On January 1, 2003 the Committee shall begin to notify applicants for renewal of continuing competence requirements as provided in T.C.A. § 63-13-304 (6). The Committee shall require each licensed physical therapist and physical therapist assistant to participate in a minimum number of experiences to promote continuing competence for the two (2) calendar years (January 1-December 31) that precede the licensure renewal year (a.k.a. biennium). Beginning January 1, 2005 all applicants for licensure, renewal of license, reactivation of license, or reinstatement of license must demonstrate competency.
Per the Rules (1150-1-.12(5)(d)), the Tennessee Physical Therapy Association (TPTA) has been acknowledged as an organization that may approve continuing education courses that will meet the requirements of continuing competence for licensure renewal in Tennessee.
In addition to attendance at continuing education courses, there are other activities that may fulfill the continuing competence requirements. Further detail on these activities may be found in the Continuing Competence Rules . The Tennessee Physical Therapy Association DOES NOT approve these other activities.
